The short answer
A refrigerant recovery machine removes refrigerant into an appropriate recovery cylinder. A vacuum pump evacuates air and moisture from a system after refrigerant has been recovered. They perform different jobs, so a vacuum pump cannot replace a recovery machine.
Recovery and evacuation do different jobs
Choose equipment by the stage of service you need to perform. Removing refrigerant before opening a system is different from preparing a repaired system for charging. A portable recovery unit and a standalone vacuum pump may both belong in a service setup, but neither is automatically a complete automotive A/C service station.
| Equipment | Main task | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Portable recovery machine | Moves refrigerant from a system to a suitable recovery cylinder | Approved refrigerants, recovery modes, cylinder and hose requirements |
| Standalone vacuum pump | Removes air and moisture during evacuation | Application approval, pump capacity, electrical supply and vacuum measurement |
| Recover/recycle/recharge station | Combines specified automotive service functions in one machine | Exact refrigerant, vehicle application and included features |
Where the Robinair RG3 fits
The RG3 is a portable recovery machine. Robinair lists liquid, vapor and push-pull recovery capabilities and an oil-less compressor. It is an option to assess for supported recovery work; it is not a substitute for a complete automatic recover, recycle and recharge station. Match the refrigerant and setup to its manual rather than assuming that every refrigerant is supported.
Where a vacuum pump fits
A standalone pump such as the 15500 serves the evacuation stage. Removing non-condensable gas and moisture is different from recovering refrigerant. Do not use a vacuum pump as a way to discharge refrigerant. The pump specification also does not replace measurement at the system or the required service procedure.

- Define the task. Is the purchase for recovery, evacuation or a complete automotive service cycle? Start here before comparing price.
- Identify the refrigerant and system. Check the exact equipment approval and operating documents. A tool sold for A/C service is not necessarily compatible with every automotive or HVAC application.
- Account for supporting equipment. Confirm the recovery cylinder, hoses, fittings, measurement tools and other required accessories. Do not assume everything shown in an application photograph is included.
- Check your power and transport needs. Review the electrical rating and physical handling requirements for the exact version ordered.
- Compare the whole setup. If you need both recovery and evacuation, budget for both functions. If your work is repetitive automotive service, compare a suitable integrated station as well.

Common buying questions
Can a vacuum pump recover refrigerant?
No. A standalone vacuum pump is evacuation equipment. Use suitable recovery equipment for refrigerant removal and collection.
Does the RG3 recharge an automotive A/C system automatically?
The RG3 is recovery equipment, not an automatic recover, recycle and recharge station. Compare a refrigerant-specific service station if you need those combined functions.
Do I need both types of machine?
That depends on the work and equipment you already have. A setup performing both recovery and evacuation needs both capabilities, either in appropriately specified separate equipment or in an integrated machine.
Is a recovery machine approved for every refrigerant?
No universal compatibility should be assumed. Check the exact model documentation for the refrigerant and application before ordering.
