Start with the refrigerant, then compare the machine
Choose an A/C service machine for the refrigerant specified by the vehicle. Among the three Robinair models compared here, AC1234-4 and AC1234-9 are designed for R-1234yf; 34788NI-H is designed for R-134a. A touchscreen or wireless feature does not change a machine’s refrigerant application.
Use the vehicle label and service information to establish the requirement before comparing controls, accessories and price.
R-134a and R-1234yf: what changes when buying equipment?
These are different refrigerants with different service-equipment requirements. Identify the refrigerant from the vehicle information rather than assuming it from the vehicle’s age or whether it is a hybrid.
EPA explains that refrigerant-specific fittings help prevent accidental mixing and must not be converted using adapters. A fitting adapter is therefore not a way to turn one of these machines into equipment for another refrigerant. See EPA’s guidance on unique fittings.
For a workshop handling both refrigerants, plan service capacity for each. This comparison covers three individual models, not every equipment configuration on the market.
Compare AC1234-9, AC1234-4 and 34788NI-H
The table highlights purchase differences, not a ranking of which machine is best for every workshop. The source names below identify the manufacturer specifications used for this comparison.
| Model | Refrigerant | Key distinction | Check before ordering |
|---|---|---|---|
| AC1234-9 | R-1234yf | 10-inch touchscreen and wireless connectivity | Vehicle database is an optional purchase; confirm compatible printing equipment |
| AC1234-4 | R-1234yf | Automatic service with an integrated refrigerant identifier | Standard model is listed at 115 VAC, 60 Hz; check the exact variant |
| 34788NI-H | R-134a | Supports conventional and high-voltage electric-compressor A/C systems | Printer, wireless module and vehicle database are optional |

Consider this model when R-1234yf service and digital reporting matter to your workflow. Robinair describes wireless software updates, report export and Mopria Print Service support. Confirm what your network and printer support, and distinguish machine software updates from separately purchased vehicle-capacity data.
When to compare the AC1234-4
Consider this model for automatic R-1234yf service with refrigerant identification before recovery. The manufacturer also lists standard and high-voltage vehicle A/C applications. Confirm the exact electrical variant and accessories in the order.
When to compare the 34788NI-H
Consider the -H model for R-134a work that includes high-voltage electric-compressor applications. Its automatic service functions and optional equipment should be assessed against the jobs your workshop actually handles. Its hybrid capability does not make it an R-1234yf machine.
A practical workshop checklist
- Identify the vehicles. List the refrigerants and service requirements of the vehicles you expect to handle.
- Check the exact model. Compare the full model number, electrical rating, connections and installation requirements.
- Separate included and optional items. Confirm databases, printers, connectivity accessories and other equipment in your order.
- Plan maintenance. Read the machine’s operating documents and identify its consumables before putting it into service.
- Compare the complete purchase. Review current product pricing, delivery information and the store’s warranty terms rather than relying on a headline discount alone.
This is a purchase guide. Operating procedures, refrigerant handling and vehicle-specific oil requirements should follow the applicable machine manual and vehicle service information.
Common buying questions
Can I choose an A/C machine by vehicle age alone?
Use the vehicle’s refrigerant label and service information. Those requirements are a better starting point than a broad assumption about model year.
Is every hybrid vehicle an R-1234yf application?
Do not use the powertrain type to infer the refrigerant. Confirm both the refrigerant and the requirements of its compressor and oil system before selecting equipment.
Does the highest-priced machine automatically fit my workshop best?
No. Start with compatibility, then compare the controls, reporting functions and accessories you will use. Check the current product pages for prices and availability.
Where can I check delivery and warranty information?
Read the store’s shipping policy and warranty information. Store-provided coverage and manufacturer warranty information are separate terms.
